Statement from Éire Nua on the Erosion of Irish Neutrality

Éire Nua notes with the gravest concern the remarks by Eire Taoiseach Micheál Martin indicating that Ireland is “open” to participating in a so-called peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. This is not diplomacy, but will be viewed as the deliberate dismantling of Irish neutrality, carried out under the guise of so-called humanitarian language.

Ireland’s traditional neutrality has been a hard-won asset. It has allowed the nation to serve as a bridge between peoples, to act as a trusted voice in global affairs, and to contribute to peace without becoming entangled in the wars of empires. By aligning our military posture with NATO and the EU’s war agenda, Micheál Martin has placed Ireland squarely in the camp of one side in this conflict. Whatever language of “UN Charter” or “non-lethal assistance” is deployed, the effect is unmistakable, Ireland will no longer be regarded as neutral by Moscow.

This reckless positioning places Ireland in real danger. It undermines Irelands capacity to act as a mediator in any future settlement in Ukraine. It risks making Irish citizens, institutions, and infrastructure the subject of hostile attention in a conflict that is not ours, and one we do not truly understand. It does nothing to advance the cause of peace.

The Taoiseach’s remarks betray the will of the Irish people, who have consistently rejected militarisation and who value neutrality as a cornerstone of sovereignty. The “triple lock” was established to prevent precisely this sort of political freelancing with Irish lives and Irish credibility. Without a UN mandate something Russia’s veto ensures will never materialise, the Taoiseach’s words amount to empty posturing. Yet even empty posturing carries real consequences when it strips Ireland of its neutrality in the eyes of the world.

Éire Nua issues its fiercest objection to this reckless pondering. Ireland must not be dragged into the wars of others. Irelands role is to stand firmly for peace, sovereignty, and independence, not to serve as a pawn in geopolitical games played by people in corridors of power.
